What will it take for Central Michigan University Chippewas to move to a new conference?

December 17th, 2009 | by admin |

After 3 MAC Championships in 4 years, and 4 bowl games, it makes one wonder what it will take for CMU to move up a conference.

What conference do you think it would be? And how would it be done?

I LOVE CMU but I don’t see them leaving the MAC at anytime soon, or ever. Even if they win multiple MAC titles, go undefeated occasionally, win a BCS bowl, and get around 20,000 people a game, it just doesn’t seem like they would be a good fit for any BCS conference. The attendance just isn’t enough, nor is the stadium large enough, to be a big school yet. Geographically the big 10 makes the most sense, but they are saving their additonal spot for another BCS school. They’ll be fine in the MAC, hopefully they keep up the success their because their program is awesome.

I think CMU’s success can be attributed more to Dan LeFevour than to the actual program being turned around.

As a Michigan fan, I really am happy for CMU’s success. I root for them unless their playing Michigan.

On a related note, Tim Hiller should be drafted very high for his success at Western.

Several undefeated seasons, several BCS wins, and a much larger fan. Geographically there is only one place to move to the Big 10 and that would take a very very very very impressive resume just to be looked at since they have their heads in the clouds good luck. You ain’t going any where.

They need to remain where they are. Here’s why:

1-Economics: Travel within the MAC is much less than with other conferences they may think about applying to join. Other sports would have to move, thus every sport will cost more. CMU barely averages 20,000 per home game. You cannot play with the major schools averaging that low attendance.

2-You lost your last two bowl games and are not consistently beating members of the BCS 6 conferences.

3-Academics: to move you will have to be accepted by the other schools and have similar academics. You are right where you need to be in terms of the MAC.

Well, there aren’t many other conferences up there. I think, at BEST right now, if an opening in the Big East arises, they should jump on it. They are a good program, ranked 25th in the AP right now, and they may only get better. I like CMU, but for the upcoming GMAC Bowl….

    why would they move up?

you act like they dominate big deal most teams go to a bowl every year 4 bowl games doesn’t mean anything. They definitely are the better team in the MAC but lets not act like they are a top 10 team. I don’t think they could hang in other conferences plus how big is the school?

Plus one of these teams could rebuild again unfortunately it won’t be my Rockets any time soon.
