What are the plastic squares that are always seen at Obama’s press conferences?

For example if you watch Obama’s address to congress on youtube-

28 seconds in, you can see one on the left of the screen. What are they for? I always see them at press conferences and such but I can’t even make an educated guess. Anyone know?

they have been used for years and years.
they are used to project his speech on to them, so that when he looks up he can still see his speech.

TELEPROMPTER——-EVERYONE THINKS OBAMA IS A GREAT SPEAKER , BUT HE IS A GREATER READER OF SPEECH WRITERS MATERIAL . UNLIKE BUSH WHO OFTEN SPOKE ON HIS OWN —–ALL OF WHAT OBAMA HAS TO SAY IS THE WORDS OF A SPEECH WRITER ——ON HIS OWN OBAMA STAMMERS AND STUTTERS LIKE BUSH WHO EVERYONE THOUGHT WAS DUMB .
