Why there are two different conferences/competitions when american football comes around?
October 23rd, 2009 | by admin |Why? What is the point on having two different conferences for a single sport? is better for the sport or is it worse?
You can’t fit all 12 teams to play each other and have no out of conferences, because of this imagine Big12 playing entire year in their own Conference where is the classic out of Conference clash Big 11 or 10 couldn’t schedule but 1 out of Conference game. Usually the two best teams in a east or west SEC or Coastal or Atlantic ACC or North or South Big 12 means that the best team will be in a BCS bowl. So you know this usually gives the edge to the two Conference format because they play late games and still have the plays more together and the ones that don’t are like a month or two off. And thats where the real advantage comes in at.

The AFC was formed when the AFL and NFL merged in 1970. In that merger three NFL teams agreed to join the ten AFL teams to form two 13-team conferences.
Baltimore, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh became part of the AFC by joining AFL teams from Boston, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, MIami, New York (Jets), Oakland, and San Diego.
Subsequent expansion has created two 16-team conferences.
Since the conferences comprise one league it allows for a championship game, such as the ones in hockey and basketball have. If all 32 teams played in one bracket, as MLB used to do, the team with the best regular season record would be the champion. That would cost the league megabucks, so the conferences and playoffs exist to prevent this.
