Tamis: About the proposed International Tamil Conference..?

January 13th, 2010 | by admin |

What is sought to be achieved as the proposal is from a ruling Tamil zealot? Is it going to break any new ground, or simply turn into one more political show, the organiser is famous for..?

At a time when the Tamils across the globe are most weary of the fate of their fraternity in some Asian countries, what pride is going to be added by the eloquence and glamour that would mark the occassion..?

Even within India, the ruling TN govt could not serve the cause of Tamil farmers in the Cauvery Delta, with all its influence with the Central govt.. or do least little to alleviate the perpetual problem of the fisherman along southern coast.. harassed by a belligerent island military, by moving the Centre, with honest seriousness..!!

The state is further suffering from unprecedented power shortage, phenomenal price rise, especially in essentials like food grains, etc.. and the deteriorated law and order that adds fuel to the fire.. while the state veteran politician and Tamil zealot is busy patting himself with laurels of sorts day in and day out..!!

Would this World Conf also turn into one more forum for the adoration of the CM..?

What are your thoughts, Tamil veterans..? Correct me if I was wrong in pointing to the doubts in the face of the goings on..!

I wish to see the whole thing in a different way, sir. True, the Conference would entertain some prominent show of sycophancy, in order to extract some favour from the CM who weilds power now. But it would also make many genuine Tamil scholars to come out with their contributions.

Just because we are going through some difficult times in economy - price rise, etc - should we all sit in a corner bidding better times?

It is true the ruling party used its political influence with Centre to benefit itself, by getting key posts, etc. There was a grand exception when Mr Chandra Babu Naidu refused to join the govt at centre and instead got hefty allocations for his state.. but where is he now, sir? He slipped in addressing problems affecting commons and lost the power. Only crafty ones could survive in politics.

That the Cauvery issue can not be solved is not the fault of DMK. Even the BJP in Karnataka would not help us, because we dont have a vote bank for them here, much less than for the Congress who despise us ever..!!

So amidst all the problems, the state does find some repite to turn away our attention from problems of sorts to some Film or Literary event.. And you should not be critical about it.

Just because I say this, it does not mean that the tardy efforts taken in the case of fishermen problem etc are justified. The State / Centre should be pressurised by the opposition to take swift action. Particularly the Congress has a greater role to help us being the ruling entity in the Centre. It is unfair to hold only DMK guilty for all the ills.

I would welcome the Conference. Let us find time for a get together with literary sholars across the world and perhaps find ways to protect our ethnic interests as well, along with our other literary interests. Pl don’t politicise this.

The kings from time immemorial, have been great patrons of language and literature, which does not mean they neglected their people and their needs.
Our C M is keeping to the tradition after all, being a great lover of language and literature.

What you said is likely to be true, as any govt would snatch every opportunity to add merit scores to itself and our CM is a great political Strategist, besides a lover of literature. So views of language lovers as pointed out by lotus and Saai above, have also to be considered.

It is also true that at a time when Sri Lankan Tamils are facing much agony in the camps, the discussion would get dominated by ethnic issues rather than literary business.
