Can I get into Stanford?
December 31st, 2009 | by admin |Here’s the info. I would like to know.
1. Should I apply to Stanford? (do I have a chance at getting in basically)
2. Do you think I would get in?
Basic Info:
-Female, white

Also, I will apply early action (so non-binding)
Potential Major: Spanish
Academics:
GPA: (at time of application) 3.9
While taking the most difficult course load available to me.
I am an IB Diploma Candidate
(International Baccalaureate Programme, for those of you don’t know, is a program where students take all college level classes for 2 years and test out at then end while also doing CAS (creativity, Action, and Service) hours, taking a philosophy class, and writing an extended essay- classes are equal in rigor to AP, but taught in a different style)
ACT: 32 Composite
Extra Curricular: (all at time of application)
Varsity Softball (3 years)
-Senior Captain
-Conference Champions 2009
-All Conference 2009

-Co-President
-Co-Founder (A friend and I started the club 1 1/2 years ago)
-(leadership skills, also practice in Spanish- which I hope to major in)
Service/Volunteer:
Kids Against Hunger/Feed My Starving Children Group (1 1/2 years)
-Vice President of group
EuroAmericano Peru Trip (2 weeks)
-2 weeks of service in Lima, working in an orphanage. My essay will be about this experience.
Youth Softball Volunteer (1 1/2 years)
-volunteer at winter clinics and an assistant summer coach
Meals on Wheels (1 1/2 years)
*I plan to write my essay on my trip to Peru and how that basically changed my life and how it will influence my college experience. Also, I plan to major in Spanish and also study cultural relations and anthropology- as well as study abroad.
Thank you!
Also, let’s just assume I have great recommendation letters.
The essay I was referring to would be my admissions essay, not my extended essay.
Heh, not bad, but here is the real question, have you taken your IB exams yet? What are the scores? You probably haven’t yet since you are asking this, but I recall they make you do the Sl exams first?
Getting a 5 is a good and all, but to be considered, a 6 is minimal. A 7 will probably put you in a good lead. What do you expect your average IB points to be? A good score of 38s+ should be very good,
Not sure how you are going to write the extended essay based on a vacation (or on a language for that matter!)
Are you taking IB Maths Hl? English and Mathematics are the first subjects that are always being viewed at before anything else. Doing them in Hl would do strengthen your background.
Since you are doing IB English and assuming you get at least a 5, you should have met the English requirement without any problems.
Not sure how reliable are these "recommendation letters", but they always do you good in the admission, that’s actually how most people get in, not lying to you. My friend got into Berkeley like this, but then again he did have good grades (he was in the AP).
Just looking at your extracurricular activities, you seem to have done more than CAS requires you.
I do not know how your IB exams will turn out, so I can’t say if you are good or not, but I have given you what you need to achieve to be considered.

Well, the above information sounds impressive but I’m sure there are going to be a lot of other applicants out there that are just as good. Have you met with anyone from the school yet? My suggestion would be to go meet with a rep in their Admissions department and ask about what they are looking for in an applicant. You can either go to the school in person or meet with a rep at a college fair. Make a favorable impression on this person and they’ll be looking for your application.

I think you’ve got a great shot for sure. You could be wait listed, but I think applying won’t be a waste at all because you’ve got serious potential to make it in and do fantastic. I would apply if I were you.
