Last year, after attending an Environmental Studies seminar at Columbia University, I became more environmentally conscious and I was inspired to start taking responsibility for my actions in the ecological sphere I live in. I decided that I wanted to learn more about the environment through the Advanced Placement course of Environmental Science. However, my high school didn’t offer the class. I took the initiative to discover more about the earth I live in on my own through Independent Study. Independent Study opened me up to a new way of learning. Instead of being forced to learn about topics I had no interests in, I had a chance to learn something on my own; something that taught me so much.

Although my independent study experience taught me to be more active on environmental issues, I never thought that I would have the opportunity to apply what I learned in a real life setting. After winning an academic scholarship from National Geographic to attend a Student Expedition to Tanzania, my true knowledge of Environmental Science was put to the test. Under the guidance of Anna Estes, an expert on spatial and temporal habitat use of elephants in the Serengeti, I evaluated the impacts of human activity on wildlife in the savannah. I spoke with Safari staff about recent poaching conflicts and with their help, I collected and analyzed data that I used in a report, which I sent to National Geographic for publication. In addition, I also produced ethnographies on Tanzanian residents, in which I compared everyday life for Maasai children with the lives of children in subsistence agricultural villages.

I wish my SAT scores were better . couldnt really afford taking classes . i just bought the book and taught myself.

please leave your comments; i won’t be offended . be h

I would say you have more of a likelihood of acceptance than not, but as you pointed out, your SAT score will be your down fall. 1880 is low for top private schools. I can’t give you a percentage because you never know with private schools anyway as they turn away "perfect" students with GPAs over 4.00 and a perfect 2400.

On a side note, none of your AP classes will get you credit at Stanford. And since your family makes less than 100,000 a year, you are entitled to free tuition at Stanford should you get in.

I wish you luck and hope you don’t stress over it too much. Take a deep breath and concentrate on your senior year and relax just a tad.

    Georgetown, Brown and Stanford.
Well, which one do you want?
Go to each site of each university and find out what courses and majors they have going for them.
Find out which is the best for you in terms of both affordability and location plus before going to a university spend an entire summer visiting places in the world you are interested in as a globe trekker so you can take it all in and put it in your back pocket so to speak so when you begin to attend you will have a fresh start and a clear attitude about the subject you wish to learn over the course of the next 4 to 6 years of your wonderful life.

Your SATs are low for elite schools.
    It helps that you’re black.
Consider some "excellent but less than elite" schools:
    Colgate
    University of Rochester

Drop the "I became more environmentally conscious" line. It makes you sounds like a naive doofus, or that you’re an egotist fishing for compliments.

"Community service harvesting maize" is another snicker-inducing line. Your trips to Africa were about your own ego, not about helping the "natives" in any significant way.

    ADDED
"Don’t waste your time with Colgate??! Is like related to toothpaste or something?"

Colgate is a very selective university, ranked 18th in the nation among "Liberal Arts colleges" (above the US Naval Academy). The acceptance rate is ~24%. 65% of admitted students are in the top 10% of their High School. It’s not a school dummies can get into, or have even heard of.
