During the first three weeks of this “26 Weeks to Freedom” accountability project, I’ve covered a wide range of topics related to Internet marketing—usually whatever happens to be at the forefront of my mind for that day. And I appreciate all the very nice comments I’ve received so far. But I have to confess that I’m not really keeping myself on track in terms of specific daily tasks and goals by which my progress should be measured if I’m really going to achieve the goal I set out to achieve on the first day (if you missed it, click the link to my blog site below and see the post for “Day 1″).
So, how do I stay focused on these specific, measurable actions where there can’t be any ambiguity about the results (i.e., at the end of the day I’ve either done them or I haven’t)? Well, the first step would be to decide exactly what those actions should be (duh!), and unfortunately I haven’t done that yet. I’ve heard it said many times that one common trait of successful people is that they have a clear set of written goals. I suspect that applies not only to their long-term goals, but to their daily objectives as well So, although I clearly stated on Day 1 what it is I want to accomplish at the end of 6 months, let me do a little “thinking out loud” here and see what I can come up with for daily and weekly goals that will get me there! (This process may take a few days, but it’s still “early in the game” and it’ll be time well spent!)
The first step, it seems, is to become organized. I have a mountain of information that I have gathered over the last several months regarding many aspects of Internet marketing (and web page design), and it is still mostly in a state of disarray. That’s a bit ironic since I actually like the process of organizing things, but I also know there’s something else that seems to appeal to me about being disorganized. (I won’t go into a psychological treatise here, but let’s just say I know myself well enough to realize that there’s a certain “fear of success” going on here:-)
You would probably laugh (or gasp in dismay) if you saw the way I frequently have to shuffle through a pile of scribbled-on papers just to find an affiliate link code or a password that I can’t quite remember. (Important note: thanks to a tip I received several months ago, the vast majority of my many log-in user names and passwords are nicely organized and safeguarded through www.Roboform.com. This is a free service which requires you to remember only one (non-recoverable) password and then it automatically logs you in to all of your password-protected sites without having to think! I highly recommend it.)
Anyway, I have just decided that my goal for this week, and probably next week too, is going to be getting all of my relevant information organized. Since I don’t have any idea how long all of that is going to take (I’m thinking specifically of those piles of paper, along with a lot of information already on my computer), I can’t put a measurable daily quantity on it. But I can commit to devoting a specific amount of time to that task each day, regardless of how much actually gets done. I think three hours sounds about right. That doesn’t mean I won’t do other things also (like writing this blog—which I’m absolutely committed to— and moving forward with the ideas I have for the other websites I’ve mentioned recently). But no matter what else I do each day, starting tomorrow I will devote no less than three hours each day to the goal of getting all my Internet Marketing information organized the way I want it. So be sure to check my “Day 23″ post and see if I actually did what I just said I was going to do……!
