African-American males are at a higher risk of having prostate cancer than the total male population. In one reported case, a physician was treating an African-American man as his family doctor for prostate related issues. The patient complained of prostate related issues but his physician did not order any diagnostic testing to investigate the possibility of prostate cancer and did not refer the patient to a urologist. It was not until the man turned fifty-two and he himself asked his doctor for routine screening that he was finally diagnosed. The man asked for the screening tests after reading local newspaper ad discussing the benefits of screening for prostate cancer. When the patient was finally diagnosed he was informed that he had advanced prostate cancer as it had already spread beyond the prostate gland. The law firm that handled the matter reported the lawsuit settled for $750,000.
